TKD Party

So, I do Tae Kwon Do (Google it if you don’t recognize the name).

At the end of every year (or beginning of the next), we have a yearly party with awards. It’s today.

The “party” is 3 hours - pretty much mostly eating, with a little bit of awards at the end.

And, as I’m a black belt, I need to attend.

So I’m gonna sit there while everyone else is eating and do nothing. Or perhaps bring my own food.

Either way, it’ll be awkwarddddddd. Just wanted to share that with you guys.

And this is my first TKD party with Celiac Disease (I was diagnosed last April), so everyone will be questioning me about why I can’t eat the food. -__-

UGH.

http://www.glutenfreeflour.com/ Tom Sawyer gluten free flour! I’ve used it to make bread, pizza, pancakes…. it’s pretty much a substitute for regular flour!

It is a bit expensive, but that’s the only downfall. It’s gluten free and can be used in tons of recipes (which you can also find on the site!!)

Birthdays and Halloween sigh

This post will mostly consist of me ranting and complaining, so if you’d like to read something short and upbeat, this isn’t it.

So the 31st of October was Halloween. While I AM a teenager and am pretty much too old for trick-or-treating, I normally still go, mainly to accompany my younger brother and help keep an eye on him. Of course, my parents come along as well, but he’s very…. um, enthusiastic, for lack of a better word to use. He’s an amazing brother, but he tends to jump around a lot and move a lot.

~~I’m just making excuses for why I still go trick-or-treating….~~

Everyone else seemed to have been dressing up for Halloween! Even other teenagers were at least going to a Halloween party or taking their siblings trick-or-treating.

However, with Celiac Disease, I can’t even eat most candies, let alone the Fun Size ones.

That there is Fun Size candy. And I know, the same company doesn’t make all of those, but those are made mostly by only a couple of different ones.

So you see, let’s imagine that Kit Kat and Hershey are made by the same company (I believe they are).

Since the candies are so small and there’s not a huge demand for them (except around Halloween), they’re made on the same processing line.

Kit Kats contain wheat, which contains gluten (what people with Celiac Disease CANNOT eat). And they’re made in (or at least we’re pretending they are, for the sake of this example), the same place as Hershey, going down the same belts and in the same machine.

Cross-contamination.

Therefore, we can’t eat the Hershey bars (even though gluten was not directly put into them, they were cross-contaminated).

Almost all Fun Size candies contain gluten or were cross-contaminated somehow. Of course, many of the regular size candies are the same, but certainly not as many.

Do you know what people give out for Halloween?

Oh look, Fun Size candy!

Only ONCE in the many years I’ve gone trick-or-treating have I gotten a regular sized candy bar.

So while a lot of normal candies contain gluten or have been cross-contaminated, the Fun Size candies have been even more compromised.

Ah, and my birthday. It was November 5th, and it was my first birthday with Celiac Disease. My dad was talking on the phone with my grandma, and she was asking if I could have cake for my birthday.

“Just for this one day, couldn’t she take off and have cake?”

Now, I love my grandma. She’s always nice to me, and she’s an amazing grandmother! But sometimes things like this irritate me.

Eating gluten free isn’t some sort of diet I have because I want to lose weight.
Eating gluten free isn’t something I do because I don’t believe in it.
Eating gluten free isn’t something I do because I think gluten free food tastes better.
Eating gluten free IS something I do because I have a genetic, biological condition that damages the lining of my intestines if I consume gluten.

I can’t just take a day off and eat cake on my birthday.

As much as I wish I could eat cake, my grandmother doesn’t understand the repercussions of it.

I could develop a lot of health problems later on in life if I consume gluten.

But…. *sigh* I mustn’t get too irritated with my grandmother. She doesn’t understand. You can’t understand what it’s like to have Celiac Disease unless you have it yourself.

And my grandmother has a bad memory (this summer, she called me when I was at the amusement park and asked if I’d eaten any funnel cake there yet *sigh*)

But I still love her! <3

I apologize for saying that they were the Bisquick pancakes, when, in fact, they were actually made with Tom Sawyer gluten-free flour. I knew my mother had planned to make Bisquick pancakes, so that was what I’d assumed.

I can smell (gluten free) Bisquick pancakes! I’m so excited! We’ve made rolls with the Bisquick mix, and pizza with it, but this is our first time making pancakes with it! I haven’t had pancakes since before April, when I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. I’d lengthen this post, but my pancake’s ready!! :)

New theme!

Anyways, sorry to everyone that I haven’t been posting as much as I wish I could.

But I found out that if I send something to a certain email address, it’ll post it on the blog. So I could actually use texting to post things right as they’re happening. So I might sometimes do that.
